Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a non-surgical, deep-cleaning procedure designed to treat gum disease and maintain oral health. It is often recommended for patients with moderate to severe Periodontal Disease (periodontitis) to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gum line and promote healing of the gums.
What Is Scaling and Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a two-step deep cleaning process. Scaling involves removing plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth, especially below the gum line. Root Planing smooths the root surfaces of your teeth, making it harder for bacteria to reattach and allowing your gums to heal properly.
The Process:
Comprehensive Evaluation: Your dentist or hygienist will perform a detailed examination of your gums and teeth, often using X-rays to assess the severity of gum disease.
Local Anesthesia (if needed):For comfort, a local anesthetic may be applied to numb the treatment area.
Scaling: Specialized tools are used to remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your teeth and under the gum line.
Root Planing: The roots of your teeth are smoothed to discourage future bacterial buildup and promote gum reattachment.
Follow-Up Care: A follow-up appointment is scheduled to monitor healing and ensure that the treatment was successful.
Indications:
Signs of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums
Persistent bad breath caused by bacteria
Pockets (spaces) between the gums and teeth deeper than 4mm
Loose teeth due to gum disease
Contraindications:
Advanced gum disease that may require surgical intervention
Certain medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes or immune disorders, that need to be managed before treatment
The Problem Scaling and Root Planing Solves:
Periodontal disease is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it can also affect your overall health. SRPs treat gum disease at its source, removing harmful bacteria and promoting healthier gums. This procedure helps prevent further progression of periodontitis and reduces the risk of tooth loss and systemic health issues linked to gum disease.
Pros:
Effective in treating gum disease and preventing further damage
Minimally invasive alternative to gum surgery
Promotes gum reattachment and reduces pocket depth
Improves overall oral health and reduces bad breath
Cons:
May cause temporary sensitivity or discomfort
Multiple visits may be needed for full-mouth treatment
Requires diligent oral hygiene and maintenance to prevent recurrence
